Life and Works of St Ignatius of Antioch The God-Bearer St. Ignatius, first-century Bishop of Antioch, called the “God-bearer,” is one of the earliest witnesses to the truth of Christ and the nature of the Christian life. Tradition tells us that as a small child, Ignatius was singled out by Jesus Himself as an example of the childlike faith all Christians must possess (see Matthew 18:1–4). In Bearing God, Fr. Andrew Damick recounts the life of this great pastor, martyr, and saint, and interprets for the modern reader five major themes in the pastoral letters he wrote: martyrdom, salvation in Christ, the bishop, the unity of the Church, and the Eucharist. Spiritual Fatherhood: Evagrius Ponticus on the Role of the Spiritual Father Spiritual fatherhood is popular, controversial, and misunderstood. For Evagrius Ponticus (AD 343–99) and the early fathers, nothing can be spiritual without the Holy Spirit, and true spiritual fathers can say, with St Paul: “in Christ Jesus I begot you through the gospel” (1 Cor 4.15). This begets freedom, not dependence. In this relationship we see an image of the freedom given to all who receive “the Spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, ‘Abba! Father!’” (Rom 8.15). True spiritual fatherhood is a charism and a ministry of healing and teaching. It is a timeless part of the Church’s tradition, which has been maintained in the East. Fr Gabriel Bunge leads readers into the ancient understanding of spiritual fatherhood in the teaching of Evagrius, without losing sight of our contemporary condition. FATHER GABRIEL BUNGE, a priest and schemamonk of the Russian Orthodox Church, lives in a hermitage in Switzerland, Eremo Santa Croce. He possesses a thorough knowledge of patristic literature, and is known worldwide for his writings on contemplative prayer. Two of his other studies on Evagrius Ponticus—Despondency and Dragon’s Wine and Angel’s Bread—are also published by St Vladimir’s Seminary Press, as well as his book The Rublev Trinity. Learn More

Excerpt The conflict between the mind and the soul 1. Listen, rational soul, partner in all my deliberations, I wish to explain to you a certain mysterious and ordinary matter. I have undertaken this without having been cleansed of passions, but I am, by the grace of Christ, nevertheless, devoting myself to it for a short while. I am fully aware, dear soul, that both you and I, naturally influenced by ignorance, are prone to error and on account of this blame others for our sins, saying that the evil lies outside us. Sometimes we lay the blame on Adam, while at other times Satan, and other times other people. In doing so we imagine that we are waging war against others, while we are really waging war against ourselves. Thinking that we are protecting one another, you and I are in reality fighting against each other; believing that we are benefiting one another, we are really harming each other, like a madman with his self-inflicted wounds, rightly enduring useless articulations and reproaches. We appear to love the commandments, but because of error we hate what informs them. Because of this, I clearly see now that we are not drawn wrongfully into either evil or good by some sort of power; on the contrary, from the time we are baptized, when we undertake any kind of endeavor using our free will we serve either God or the Devil, and one or the other quite rightly compels us to take his side.
