The triennial international conference “Prayer and Spirituality in the Early Church” is hosted by the Centre for Early Christian Studies, Australian Catholic University, and was first held in Melbourne in 1996. Each volume of this ongoing series contains selected conference papers from international and Australian contributors.

The Fathers of the Church sometimes seem remote from us, and to understand them we must put aside our modern prejudices and limitations. Their Christianity was "the imitation of the divine nature", a fierce effort toward perfection, but free of the moralism that would later emerge. We will never understand the Fathers unless we remember that they saw themselves in the light of the Apocalypse, and that they viewed the word and humankind against the blazing light of the Transfiguration. They laid a pattern which was to have profound effects on the nature of Christianity itself. Through their work the church achieved its unity and its truth. The Fathers and the Greek Fathers in particular, are also noted for their deep devotion to the dignity of humankind. For the Fathers the human person is a triumph, the foundations of which lie in its likeness to God. It is this fact that makes genuine spiritual life possible. All the papers in this volume demonstrate just how refreshing a re-encountering of the Fathers can be for contemporary Christians. Although they wrote at the dawn of the Christian era, the Fathers prove to be oddly contemporary. Like present-day theology they were engaged in an encounter with contemporary culture.

This book of papers is presented in 5 sections: Prayer, Spirituality, Ascetisim, Land and Neighbour and The Cappadocian Fathers.
