Folded Card with envellope

“Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death . . .”

Folded Card with icon which was originally painted in fifteenth-century Antioch, by an iconographer using the post-Byzantine, Allepan style of iconography. The original icon is kept at the monastery of Our Lady of Balamand in Lebanon.

Greeting inside Card;

“… and upon those in the tombs, bestowing life!” – Paschal Troparion

On the back of the card;

"Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive." - 1 Corinthians 15:20-22

The icon reproduced on the front of this card is properly titled "The Descent into Hades" (or "The Harrowing of Hell"). It is the icon of Christ's victory over death. In the icon, Christ, shown in shining robes, is trampling down the broken gates of Hades. To Christ's right and left, representing humanity, are the righteous prophets of the Old Covenant, who waited in faith for Christ's coming, together with John the Baptist. Taking Adam and Eve by the hand, Christ pulls them up, liberates them from Hades, and bestows upon them resurrected life.
