Quick Overview

Gabriel appears in the literature of the Abrahamic traditions as the bearer of God's messages. In Greek the word "angellos" means "messenger". When an angel is depicted in an icon the angel is seldom alone, but rather is part of a larger icon bringing the message to somebody, as, for example, in the icon of the Annunciation.
