Why was it necessary for Christ to suffer and die on the Cross? Starting with the Middle Ages, many Western theologians began to teach that Christ suffered in order to propitiate (appease) the wrath of an angry God. This "juridical" understanding of salvation is rejected by Orthodoxy.
